Peter and the Wolf

“Peter and the Wolf” was written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936 and was meant for a children’s theater in Moscow. The story and the music was written by Prokofiev; he used instruments from four instrument families (Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Percussions) to tell the story. In the story, each character is represented by a…

Don't Spread Diseases

Swine Flu is back in the news again and with schools re-opening next week cases of both flu and swine flu are expected to increase in the short term. Seomra Ranga has some classroom posters in both English and Gaeilge to remind and encourage pupils to engage in good hygiene practices. There are seven posters there at the moment, four in English:

I’ve introduced another new aspect to the new website with the creation of the Seomra Ranga Flickr Photostream. Some time ago while the old website was still running, a teacher suggested that it would be a good idea to have some photos of different places around the country on the site. These could be used for a comparative study section of the SESE Geography curriculum. I received a small number of photos and had them on the old site, but perhaps many people may not have been aware of this. So I have re-grouped them and placed them in a Flickr Photostream. There is only a small number of them there at the moment, but hopefully with the generosity of teachers’ donations to the site, the number will increase into the future. At the moment there are some photos of Sligo, Mayo, Cork and Galway as well as some photos of a stranded Sperm Whale. If teachers are willing to donate photos of their local area to Seomra Ranga, just email them to me as attachments at info@seomraranga.com, explaining in as much detail as possible the content and the location of the photos. Please be aware of copyright issues and only send me photos which have been taken by yourself and not taken from any other website. The photos can be viewed by directly visiting the Seomra Ranga Flickr Photostream or by clicking on the Flickr logo under the “Follow Seomra Ranga” section on the top right-hand side of the website.

CESI Conference 2011

CESI Conference 2011

CESI Conference 2011

The Computer Education Society of Ireland (CESI) annual conference will be held on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th February 2011 in Portlaoise. The theme for this year’s conference is “ICT in Education – Changing Landscapes“. The Friday evening event is known as a “CESI Meet” which combines a mixture of mini-presentations (7 minutes), followed by some thought provoking Soap Box dissertations (15 mins) and finishing with a series of nano-presentations (2 mins). The Saturday event consists of a Keynote speech followed by simultaneous 30-40 minute talks or 90 minute workshops. It is intended that this year’s conference will be more “hands on” than ever before so there will be plenty of opportunity for teachers to “learn by doing”.

The Computer Education Society of Ireland (CESI) is an association of practicing teachers from primary, post primary and third level with the common interest of using ICT to benefit teaching and learning. CESI supports the development of methodologies that help to marry new technologies with a sound pedagogy. I’ve been to the last two conferences and have come away enthused by lots of new ideas put forward mainly by classroom teachers who use technology in interesting and innovative ways. As well as attending the conference again this year, I’ll also be doing a little presenting on Friday night and conducting a workshop on Saturday. Registration for the conference is now open. You can register to attend either the Friday or Saturday events or both. Friday night has less capacity and books up much quicker. So the advice is: book to atted the conference soon.
