Seomra Ranga: 1. Can you explain the background to the work of the National Educational Welfare Board?
Clare Ryan: In Ireland, the complex issue of attendance has been the subject of policy attention in recent decades but was not addressed systematically until the Education (Welfare) Act, 2000. This act established the National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB) in 2002 – mandating it with supervising and implementing the provisions of the Act to effectively ensure that ‘each child attends a recognised school or otherwise receives a certain minimum education’ (Section 10). read more…
Marine Life HD App
Thanks to Tony Vincent, I’ve just been made aware of the Marine Life HD app, which is free at the moment for a limited period. After just a quick run-through of the app, I can certainly say that it looks beautiful. I can well imagine it having a great impact projected onto an IWB. It has vivid, colourful images and soothing background music. It has lots of information on almost thirty species of underwater creatures like dolphin, ray, hermit crab, sea-horse, lionfish, clownfish, emperor penguin. read more…
The Story of Ireland O’ Brien Press/Seomra Ranga Competition
To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the O’ Brien Press has kindly given us five copies of “The Story of Ireland” by Brendan O’ Brien as prizes for a website competition. The Story of Ireland begins “After the Ice” and lasts 9,000 years. It tells the story of the whole island and its people. The book’s 27 chapters chronicle invasions, wars, Christianity, famine and a divided island, mixed with tales of Celtic head hunters, mysterious stone tombs, the Vikings, the Black Death, life in castles, the Titanic tragedy, music, mobiles and computers. read more…

Interview With Harold Hislop, Chief Inspector DES (Part 2)
Dr. Harold Hislop is the Chief Inspector with the Department of Education and Skills (DES). Originally from Co. Cavan, he trained as a primary teacher in Church of Ireland College of Education (CICE). He taught in Whitechurch NS in Rathfarnham, where he later became principal. He gained a Ph.D. from Trinity College, Dublin (UCD) and in the mid-1990′s was seconded to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA). He subsequently joined the Inspectorate of the DES in 1998 and was appointed Chief Inspector in April 2010. read more…
