Edchatie Poster

I’ve written a previous post about EdchatIE, a Monday night debate/discussion about educational issues which takes place through the medium of Twitter. It involves teachers of all levels and there is a great sharing of ideas. Even if you can’t make it from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Monday nights, the whole conversation is saved as a summary and can be viewed each week on the EdchatIE Wiki.

This is a poster to download and put in your staffroom or share it with other teachers on your staff to make them aware that this takes place weekly. It will also tell them how to set it up and become involved.

Augmented Reality With String

Augmented Reality With String

Augmented Reality 02Wikipedia defines Augmented Reality (AR) as “a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality”. Augmented Reality was a term I had heard bandied about but had never really understood. To be honest, I’m not sure whether I still really understand what it means. read more…

National Tree Day

National Tree Day

National Tree Day

Thursday, October 6th marks National Tree Day. Now in its fifteenth year, schools are being encouraged to place a particular focus on the study of trees on National Tree Day. To celebrate the United Nations designation of 2011 as ‘The International Year of Forests’, the theme for this year’s Tree Day is “Ár gcara an crann á cheiliúradh” or “Celebrating our friend the tree“. With this theme, pupils are being encouraged to recognise the importance of trees and forests and the wide usage of forest products in our everyday lives. read more…

Áras Kids

Áras Kids is the children’s website for Áras an Uachtaráin. Considering the publicity associated with the presidential election at the moment, it might be an opportune time to introduce pupils to the residence of the president. The website has two sections – one detailing the official residence of the president and the other detailing the facilities and buildings in the general Phoenix Park area. In a section on the house itself, you can take a virtual tour of rooms in the house such as The President’s Room, the State Reception Room, the Council of State Room, State Drawing Room, the Library, the Francini Corridor and the Entrance Hall. There is an example of a Day in the Life of the President to give pupils an idea of the work that the President does. There are some photos of the President greeting visiting dignatories as well as on her official engagements. Another section details the role of the President and it outlines the powers that are associated with the office of the President. read more…

QR Codes in the Classroom

QR Codes in the Classroom

Seomra Ranga QR Code

QR Codes are the next big innovation that will be coming more prevalent in our daily lives over the next few years. QR stands for Quick Response as the information embedded in the code can be read or accessed almost instantaneously. It’s a two-dimensional barcode that is generally square in pattern, set against a white background. Almost any kind of information can be embedded in the QR Code – website URLs, plain alpha-numeric text, SMS messages, email addresses, Youtube videos, iTunes links. The list is endless. To read a QR Code, you need a QR Code reader app for a mobile device and there are lots available. The app activates the mobile device’s camera and the scanning device will respond by opening up the correct application to handle the encoded data appropriately. read more…
