The World Education Games (WEG) will take place from October 13th – 15th. The World Education Games is the expanded format of what was once World Maths Day and now includes World Literacy Day and World Science Day. The communications team at Twitter in Dublin have made contact to let us know that Twitter is hosting #EducationDay on Thursday, October 15 in Ireland and across Europe. #EducationDay will celebrate the role that Twitter can and, indeed, already does play in the classroom. Peg Comprehension: Flat Stanley 01
This resource is aimed at junior/middle pupils or SEN pupils at the beginning of literacy work on comprehension. It is based on chapters 1-2 of the novel “Flat Stanley” by Jeff Brown. Either the pupil reads the story themselves, or the teacher/SNA reads the story to the pupil.
Laminate all of the pages in the resource and cut up into ten separate cards. Either the pupil or teacher/SNA should read the question at the top of each card

Tree Day 2015
The Tree Council of Ireland supported by Tetra Pak is calling people nationwide to go outside with their children to celebrate all that nature has to offer on Tetra Pak Tree Day 2015 on Thursday 8th October. As part of this year’s campaign, themed “Be a True Friend of the Environment”, over 1,000 Birch trees will be made available for primary schools through the website, www.treeday.ie, to help teach children about the importance of planting trees and to go towards achieving their 5th Green School flag. read more…
Book Review: A Hollow in the Hills
I started to read “A Hollow in the Hills” by Ruth Frances Long with great anticipation and the powerful prologue really captured my attention but, I have to confess that I found it difficult to complete the book. However, I have great respect for the author. The reason I found it difficult is that I lost interest. I was very confused because the book is a sequel. The book does not stand alone well. I would really have needed to read the previous book in the series. It is difficult to read because the reader is trying to understand a very involved plot without the vital background information contained in the first book. read more…

“Developing Children’s Critical Thinking Through Picturebooks” is a guide for primary and early years students and teachers by Mary Roche, Senior Lecturer in Education at St. Patrick’s College in Thurles. In the Introduction to the book, Mary herself refers to it as a “guide to those who wish to introduce children to good literature, big ideas, critical engagement, and the notion of making meaning together through thinking and discussion”. read more…
