Guest Post: On Starting School

I came across this blog post last week and was touched by it. I tweeted the link to it and lots of teachers seemed to share it. I think the reason that it touched a chord with teachers was that we get so caught up in making preparations for the return to school, that we sometimes forget how much of a change it is for both the parent and the child, especially when the child is starting school for the first time.  I think that it is also really interesting for teachers to see school from another perspective. It’s a great read! read more…

Word of the Day

Teachers all know how important it is to develop the oral and written language of pupils. This resource is a header to place in a prominent position in the classroom, under which can be recorded new or interesting words which are discovered during the day. These could be recorded in a copy or personal dictionary or the teacher could encourage pupils to use them in an oral sentence during the day.

Components of a Story

Pupils need to be made aware that there are different elements that make up the structure of a story. Most or all of these elements need to be present in the story to give it structure. These are: Setting, Period, Theme, Plot, Point of View, Characters. This presentation explains to pupils what these components are and encourages them to use them.
