Pelmanism 04

pelmanism_04Pelmanism is the name of the memory game which you play by turning up pairs of cards from a pack and trying to pick out matching pairs. It is named after the Pelman Institute which was set up for the study of memory in London in the 1930s.

This oral language memory game focuses on homophones (words that sound the same but are spelled differently). There are three sets of sixteen cards (eight pairs) in this pack, 48 cards in all.

Dolch Loop Cards 01

dolch_loop_cards_01Dolch words are a list of 220 “service words” developed in the 1940s by William Dolch. They consist of a series of sets of words which are considered to be vocabulary which occurs most frequently in children’s reading material. Although some of the words in the lists can be sounded out phonetically, they really should be memorised as “sight words”.

Book Review: The Lost Fairy

the_lost_fairyI recently read “The Lost Fairy” by Marian Broderick to my three and half year old sisters. This highly entertaining fairytale follows Flora on a journey as she realises that she needs friends to help her regain her rightful perch on the Christmas tree.
