Reading for pleasure – it’s a no-brainer, really, isn’t it? It’s so obvious that it’s a really great thing to encourage children to read, I nearly feel a bit sheepish saying it. It’s like motherhood and apple pie. Who could be against it? (Bang-bang, you’re dead. When I was at school, children’s books were known as ‘storybooks’. That’s not a word you hear much lately; it has an old-fashioned ring to it. Gifted Education Links
This week is Gifted Education Awareness Week (GEAW). Its aim is to encourage teacher awareness of Exceptionally Able pupils in the classroom and to help overcome the myths about these pupils. By recognising the educational needs of Exceptionally Able pupils the teacher can help these pupils achieve their potential in the classroom. The most harmful myth about Exceptionally Able pupils is that they will perform well no matter what; and if they don’t perform well, they were probably never gifted in the first place! read more…
Co-Operative Learning 02
Getting pupils to work in groups is a great methodology to take advantage of in the classroom. However, in order for it to be most effective, it is helpful to allocate pupils a role to play in the group discussion, otherwise the usual confident pupils may take over, and the pupils you want to encourage to take a more active part may stay in the background.

Guest Post: Subbing – A Way of Life
My dream has always been to work in education. I love learning, I love exploring, imagining, discovering. When I graduated into the primary sector I began to dream about my classroom: What will it look like? What will the pupils be like? The school? All sorts of questions. As of yet, I do not have that classroom. I am a sub! On the positive side, subbing has made me develop the ability to think on my feet. Our School Community QR Codes
A member of staff in my school recently organised an eye-catching and colourful display board in the entrance foyer to our school. It was called “Our School Community”. Every pupil in the school drew and coloured a small “head and shoulders” picture of themselves. These were arranged in a circle in the centre of the display board. read more…
