Seomra Ranga’s 5th Birthday

Time to celebrate! Seomra Ranga is five years old today. I can’t really believe that! I still remember that summer of 2007 when I was putting the original site together, really using it as a way of organising for myself the resources I had put together and seeing if it had the bones of a website. I honestly never thought that I’d still be working on it five years later! However, it has been such a huge success that it’s hard to imagine what I did with all this time before I began working on Seomra Ranga! read more…
Help My Kid Learn

I just happened across the Help My Kid Learn website during the week and wondered how it came about. It seems that as part of the national literacy and numeracy strategy, the Department of Education and Skills (DES) asked the National Adult Literacy Agency to highlight the role that parents and communities can play in improving children’s literacy and numeracy, read more…
ICT in the Classroom eBulletin – Issue 2
This is the second of David Ganly’s ICT in the Classroom eBulletins. David teaches in Donabate Community College and he says that the eBulletin started off as an idea he had to engage and encourage teachers in his school to use ICT in the classroom. After putting the first edition together he soon realised that it would be more beneficial if he made it open for any teacher to use
Show Me App

There are a number of whiteboard apps in the App Store but the one I’m getting great use out of at the moment is called Show Me. I think that part of the reason why I like it so much is its simplicity. It’s fairly basic, without the bells ‘n whistles, but that is what I and many teachers want. You have a choice of seven different pen colours to draw with (it is best to invest in a rubber-tipped stylus to use with this app). There is an eraser to manually erase some of your work. read more…

Hokusai App
I’m not aware of any apps in the iTunes App Store that will record audio and allow it to be saved as an .mp3 file, which is probably the most widely accessible audio file format. However, I heard about the Hokusai app from Joe Dale on Twitter earlier this year. Joe works in Modern Foreign Languages and writes on his own Blog. The Hokusai app, available for iPhone and iPad in the iTunes Store, is a neat little app. It is very easy to record audio using this app. It saves it as a .wav file (uncompressed) or a MPEG-4 file (compressed) but not .mp3. However there is a way around this. read more…
Know Your Ireland App

Many teachers will be familiar with the great “Know Your Ireland” geography software for schools from the Irish software company Edware. This company also produces other similar geography titles: “Know Your Europe”, “Know Your USA”, “Know Your World”. Edware has now released a “Know Your Ireland” iPad app available in the iTunes App Store. We all know that it can be really difficult to find apps that are specific to the Irish curriculum and to Irish classrooms, so I was delighted to read about this new release. read more…

Rannta agus Amhráin as Gaeilge

Táim ag iarraidh rannta, dánta agus amhráin as Gaeilge a chur le chéile le “Crowdsourcing”, chun tacaíocht a thabhairt do na téamaí éagsúla i gCuraclam na Gaeilge. Má tá dánta/amhráin/rannta agat a bhain tú úsáid astu agus a bhí úsáideach don téama, déan cliceáil ar an nasc thíos, agus fág an dán mar nóta ag bun an bhlagphost. Tá súil agam go n-éirí leis an “Crowdsourcing” seo mar tá a fhios agam go bhfuil neart dánta/rannta agus amhráin bailithe cheana féin ag bunmhúinteoirí na tíre.
