Maths History
This Powerpoint presentation shows a selection of images from the pages of a 4th Class Maths Book from 1940’s Ireland. It shows examples of old money (pounds, shillings and pence), old measures of length (miles, perches, furlongs), old measures of capacity (gallons, pecks and bushels), old shop bills and much more. It’s a bit of nostalgia with lots of unusual language, but it might be worth showing pupils what 4th class pupils had to learn for maths in 1940’s Ireland.

Word Mess App
Word Mess is a new app that I think pupils will love and it comes with a word of warning – it is quite addictive! If your pupils like word games like puzzles, wordsearches or crosswords, then they will love this app. It is a cross between a type of wordsearch and a word cloud. There are two main sections in the app – Challenge and QuickPlay. Quickplay has three different games – Find, Category and Rhymes. read more…
Garda Vetting
Through the course of a conversation with educators on Twitter on Tuesday night, I was amazed to discover that if people belong to different organisations through which they come into contact with children or vulnerable adults, they must get separate Garda vetting for each individual one. One would have thought that once Garda vetting has been approved for any organisation, then that would be transferable to any other organisation with which you were involved. read more…
Coastal Wildlife
Powerpoint presentation detailing wildlife to be found around Ireland’s coastline. It mostly deals with birdlife found on the coast. This resource has been digitised from a filmstrip resource made available to schools by the Department of Education in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Some parts made be dated and it is up to the teacher to make it relevant to the present day.

The Irish Teacher Blogs website has recently been re-branded as EdBlogsIE. Featuring a brand new logo and name, the idea behind the site has not changed. It’s an aggregate site that gathers together blog posts written about educational issues by Irish teachers from primary, secondary and third level backgrounds. At present more than sixty different educators are contributors to the site, so it gives teachers a wide range of viewpoints on educational issues affecting Irish classrooms. It also gives a great insight into new ideas, new methodologies and innovative teaching styles that teachers are experimenting with in Irish classrooms. read more…
