Food Talk About
This is an oral language activity that can be done with pupils from about first class upwards (unless the teacher reads the topics on the card for the infant classes). On each card, a pupil is asked to name three foods. Initially, the pupil can simply name the required three foods. Book Review: The Watching Wood
The Watching Wood, by Erika McGann, is set in a school for the magical. It is full of shapeshifters and dark fairies. A girl called Grace is the main character. She has to try and get her friends out of this school to where they have been brought. Adie, Delilah (very quiet), Una (not the cleverest), Jenny (always gets into trouble) and Rachel (just loves fashion) are her friends. They had been kidnapped. Book Review: Sally Go Round the Stars
Sally Go Round the Stars is an eyecatching book. My initial impression was formed by the wonderful graphics and illustrations. While they illustrate the poems, they also draw your imagination in to create a scene behind and around the characters. It encourages you to develop a narrative around the characters and the text.
As the saying goes “a picture paints a thousand words” and a couple that come to mind are “There was an Old Woman” which very cleverly shows the contents of her stomach, there is also” Skinny Malink” and “Little Miss Muffet”. “Incy Wincy Spider” cleverly illustrates a complex maze of pipes for the poor spider to climb! read more…
Peg Subtraction 02
This resource is aimed at pupils in junior/middle classes or SEN pupils at the beginning of work on subtraction of tens and units. It is based on subtraction without regrouping – units are subtracted from tens & units up to 19. Laminate all of the pages in the resource and cut up into fifty-four separate cards. Pupils should work out the sum on the left side of each card and place a clothes peg on the correct answer on the right of the card. The tens are coloured black and the units red to assist with the subtraction.

Movie Reviews
This resource is made up of promotional posters for nineteen fictional movies. The resource can be used in lots of different ways. Pupils could be asked to give an oral presentation outlining the plot in the movie. They could be asked to do a written movie review detailing the characters, plot, setting and movie ending. Either of these activities could be done as individuals, in pair or group work.

Guest Post: Revised Sick Leave Arrangements
On 1st September 2014 a revised sick leave scheme came in to effect for teachers. The Department of Education and Skills (DES) issued Circular 59/2014 which outlines teachers’ sick leave entitlements.
