This is a magical rhyming tale perfectly suited for older children. The illustrations are beautiful and add to the mystery. This was one of the first picture books that felt age appropriate for this class. We read this story over two sessions and the children did not want to finish, they were totally enthralled and enraptured by Panpang’s story.

Panpang is a young girl who lives in a mountain village with her family. Her grandmother tells her of a past when the earth was alive and green, very different to the world Panpang now lives. In this magical past the Blue Buffaloes thrived.

But disaster had struck and now Panpang and her tribe were in great danger from famine. On her deathbed, Panpang’s grandmother tells her that the Blue Buffaloes are still alive. Panpang heads on a mission to track down the Blue Buffaloes and has some wildly terrifying encounters on her journey.

Will definitely read again. Rating 5/5.
