I’ve previously written a blog post about the Logainm Website, which is the national database for the placenames of Ireland. It’s an invaluable resource for research on the placenames of your locality or the locality of your school. The team at Logainm have now developed a free resource specifically aimed at the senior end of primary schools. The resource is a 44-page manual for teachers, written completely “as Gaeilge”, the aim of which is to instil in pupils an interest in the placenames of Ireland through research and activities. While the work that pupils would complete would be part of the Gaeilge curriculum, it also has obvious integration with other areas of the curriculum, especially SESE Geography and History. Six units of work are presented in the manual, one as an introduction to the background of Irish placenames, the other five based on different themes.
The six units are:
Ceacht 1: Logainmneacha a chur i láthair
Ceacht 2: Tíreolaíocht
Ceacht 3: Crainn agus Coillte
Ceacht 4: Ainmhithe agus Éin
Ceacht 5: An Muileann
Ceacht 6: Sióga
Within the manual, there is lots of photocopiable material to support the work of the teacher: worksheets, handouts, crosswords, activity sheets, quizzes and wordsearches. There are also glossaries which explain word meanings of placenames in English, which are really useful.
This resource is free to download from the Logainm Website. (.pdf file 6MB)
