sacred_space

Lots of new resources have been added to the site to enhance the Sacred Space area of the classroom. Firstly, there are labels for some of the items that may be found in the space: bible, cross, crucifix, prayer book, rosary beads etc. There are also some prayers in A4 poster form as Gaeilge that pupils may learn:

  • Comhartha na Croise
  • Ár nAthair
  • Sé do Bheatha
  • Glóir don Athair
  • Altú Roimh Bhia
  • Altú Tar Éis Bia

These resources can be found in the Religion posters section of the site HERE>>>>>

Tom Crean’s Rabbit

Tom Crean's Rabbit

“Tom Crean’s Rabbit” by Meredith Hooper and Bert Kitchen tells a true story from Scott’s last voyage to Antarctica in 1910 on the ship called “Terra Nova”. The story is based on diaries kept by the men on the ship. The storyline is quite basic – Tom is looking all over the ship for a warm and cosy place to make a home for his rabbit. He visits many areas of the ship which helps to teach ship vocabulary: hold, cabin, galley, deck, rigging, mast. Each area of the ship is not a suitable place for the rabbit for one reason or another. Many other animals are also on the ship and these are introduced throughout the story. He finally finds the perfect place for his rabbit and he gets a surprise on Christmas Day.

The book is beautifully illustrated and would be a suitable addition if the teacher is dealing with the story of Tom Crean in history. The book itself states that it is suitable for reading, history and geography for Key Stage 1 (7-9 year olds approx.) It is published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books. ISBN 1-84507-393-2. It cost me €5.99

Irish Independent Mentions Seomra Ranga

It was a great surprise to see the Irish Independent give a mention to the Seomra Ranga Blog in todays business section of the paper. The “Blog Digest” section of the paper gives a mention to blogs every Thursday and today they focussed on Irish blogs with an educational interest. Considering Seomra Ranga is not yet two years old, I was amazed to see it recommended in a National paper. The article also mentioned the blogs of Noel Cunningham, John Hegarty and the Askea Boys NS blog. Read the article from today’s Irish Independent HERE

  • The Age of Revolution – a timeline of major conflicts beginning with the French Revolution
  • 1916 Easter Rising – vocabulary flashcards
  • Parts of a Norman Castle
  • Presidents of Ireland
  • The Great Famine – vocabulary flashcards

More history resources are in the pipeline and will be added to the site as soon as possible. These new history resources can be viewed HERE

Another new section has been added to the site with the creation of a collection of signs for group names in the classroom. There are three different collections in English (“The Red Table”; The Green Group”; The Orange Table”), three collections as Gaeilge (“An Bord Buí”; “An Grúpa Gorm”; “An Foireann Glas”), and three themed collections (Cats, Dogs and Stars). All signs are free to download to all users of the Seomra Ranga website.

Swine Flu is very much in the news at the moment and will probably be more so with the return to school in September. Seomra Ranga has produced some classroom posters in both English and Gaeilge to encourage pupils to engage in good hygiene practices. There are six posters there at the moment. These posters can be viewed in the SPHE Posters section HERE>>>>>

The HSE also has a nice poster for children about Swine Flu and good hygiene practices. This can be downloaded HERE>>>>>

The DES (Department of Education and Science) also has an information sheet on Swine Flu for schools. This can be downloaded HERE>>>>>
