Positive Pupil Reaction to New Learning Space
I wrote a Blog Post some time ago about how, after being challenged by Pam Moran and Ira Socol at the ICT in Education Conference in Tipperary to make a change in our classrooms to make the space more conducive to learning, I created a new Learning Space in my classroom for the last six weeks of the last term. It was a bit of a journey into the unknown as I consigned my teacher’s table to the back of the room, making it unemployed for the remainder of the term. read more…

Scratch
I’m doing the NCTE summer course on Scratch Programming and Numeracy in Senior Primary Classes this week. I’d heard and read a lot about Scratch over the years but knew virtually nothing about how to work it or how it could be used in the classroom. Scratch, developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab, is a free programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art — and share your creations on the web. read more…

Subtraction Bookmark – Doubles
This resource (subtraction doubles) is a handy bookmark size to keep in a maths book/copy to remind pupils of the set of tables that they are learning in any particular week. There are two bookmarks on a page. If you find that the bookmark is still too large, set your printer options to print two pages per page.

Web 2.0 in Infant Classes
Some months ago, infant teacher Mary Jo Bell wrote a Guest Post on this blog about Infants and ICT which was well received at the time. Mary Jo has now teamed up with the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) to produce a great video demonstrating the benefits of using Web 2.0 Technologies in the infant classroom. In the video Mary Jo mentions how she uses Audacity, Skype and Twitter in the infant classroom. read more…
Register with the Teaching Council
The INTO has reported that the Education Amendment Act 2012 has been passed by the Oireachtas and signed by the President. As well as a number of other issues, the Act allows the DES and Teaching Council to exchange data in order to compile lists of registered and unregistered teachers. It also paves the way for the Minister for Education and Skills to commence Section 30 of the Teaching Council Act. read more…
The Literacy Shed
The Literacy Shed is a new website that has been online only a couple of weeks but it is getting great reviews from many in the online education community and is building up a large following. The reason is that it is providing great inspiration, ideas and resources for literacy lessons in the classroom. The site is split up into different areas/genres, each of which is called a “shed”. read more…
