Irish Web Awards
The Irish Web Awards are being held in the Mansion House, Dublin on November 1st. I just found out today that Seomra Ranga had been nominated for an award in the “Best Education and Third Level Website” category ages ago, and I didn’t even know about it! The nominations were then whittled down to a Short List and whittled down further again to a list of Finalists. read more…
Maths Week Table Quiz
Eight rounds of six questions, a tie-break round and answers to all questions on 127 Powerpoint slides. All questions are roughly based on the primary school mathematics curriculum. I’ve attempted to provide a variety of questions from different strand areas. Hopefully, there is a mixture of easy enough questions and some to challenge the better able pupils. The aim really is that pupils should be able to get a good few correct with the harder ones there to sort out winners.
ICT in the Classroom eBulletin – Issue 5

This is the fifth of David Ganly’s ICT in the Classroom eBulletins. David teaches in Donabate Community College and he says that the eBulletin started off as an idea he had to engage and encourage teachers in his school to use ICT in the classroom. After putting the first edition together he soon realised that it would be more beneficial if he made it open for any teacher to use, so he then decided to circulate it through his email contacts, the CESI list and Edmodo. read more…

Signs of Autumn Twitter Project Review

The first week of October saw us take part in our first “Signs of Autumn” Twitter Project. We had done a successful project on the Signs of Spring earlier in the year, so, through Twitter one night, Mary Jo Bell suggested to me that we should organise a similar one to get pupils to record the signs of autumn. This was a hastily organised project, but it turned out to be another great success. Tweets were gathered together by everyone using the project hashtag #anfomhar read more…
Guest Post: Tomás Ó Ruairc – Teaching Council
Teaching in Ireland in the 21st Century – a Road Map for Enhanced Professionalism
Long before the Teaching Council was established in 2006, many in the education sector had called for regulation of the profession. They saw the establishment of a teaching council as a vital step in the professionalisation of teaching. Their vision, stretching back to the 1970’s when teaching qualifications were given degree status, was to have ownership of the profession vested in its own members, rather than the Church or the State. They sought to reassure the public that they could trust them to do read more…

Many thanks to all of the teachers who entered our competition with Veritas for a copy of “Preparing for First Reconciliation – A Guide for Families” by Elaine Mahon. It was a great success. World Teachers’ Day 2012
Tomorrow, October 5th, is World Teachers’ Day. Held annually on October 5th since 1994, it was created by UNESCO to celebrate teachers worldwide. Its aim is to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers. It’s great that there is a day to focus on teachers and the work that they do. Let’s hope the media will be able to celebrate the day with us and put a positive spin on teachers and the contribution they make to society. read more…
CESI Meets

The Computer in Education Society of Ireland (CESI) started a conference format some years ago based on “Teachmeets” which were happening in other countries. The format is great because it is less intimidating, less formal and very relaxed. They consist of Mini-Presentations (5-7mins) and Nano Presentations (2 mins). I’ve been to a few at this stage and also presented at a few. Most people will say read more…
