This book features the many different lighthouses dotted around our coast. It explains how they were built and how they work. It explains interesting features such as why lighthouses are painted in different colours. It also explores the life of a lighthouse keeper.
This book has lovely illustrations giving visual context and interest to readers. It delves into science (birds, marine life), history (last female lighthouse keeper, history of lighthouses), geography (location of lighthouses), art (visual elements of lighthouses). You can dip in and out of the book, you don’t have to read it page by page.
We enjoyed the quiz at the end. It’s a fun and engaging finish, reinforcing everything you’ve learned. We would recommend this book for pupils aged 8 upwards. Adults would also enjoy this book.
We would recommend this book to someone who is curious about how things work, likes visually rich non fiction or someone who likes nature, human stories and engineering.
We give this book a score of 9/10.
