What Is It? is a fun language game in PPTX format to play in the classroom. This FREE shorter version is aimed at pupils in middle and senior classes. On each slide, pupils are given an unusual word. Three different possible explanations are given for each word. Pupils have to decide which is the correct explanation. There are 10 different words in the presentation for pupils to work out.

All of the words in the presentation are real words, even though some of them may seem to pupils to be made up.

Make sure that you show the presentation in Slideshow mode to get the best out of the slide transitions and animations.

Firstly, display the slide with the given word.  By clicking on the forward arrow on your keyboard, each of the three explanations will appear. Give the pupils time to think about the explanations for the word and then get them to write either A, B or C in their copy or on a small whiteboard. When pupils are finished, by clicking on the forward arrow two explanations disappear, leaving the one correct explanation.

This game could be used as a fun warm-up to a literacy lesson, used with a small group or it could be used as a station in station teaching.
