When is Easter?
The date of Easter varies each year. It is a
moveable feast. The date of Easter is determined by the following:
Easter Sunday falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or
after March 21st. It cannot come before March 22nd or after April 25th.
The first Nicene Council in the year 325AD set out this method of
working out the date of Easter.
Why "Easter"?
Long ago the Goddess Eostre (or Eastre) was
worshipped with the arrival of Spring. When people became Christians
they kept the same name for the festival celebrating the resurrection of
Jesus.
What's an Easter Bonnet?
The tradition of the Easter Bonnet possibly dates
back to the late 1800's. Easter Sunday was known as the "Sunday of Joy".
Mothers and daughters who had worn dark and drab colours during the
period leading up to Easter began to wear colourful hats to the Easter
celebration in church. The hats, usually made of straw, were adorned
with flowers, ribbons and lace. The round shape is thought to represent
the sun and the brim is thought to represent the path taken by the sun
as it revolves around the earth.
