Some pupils with special needs, perhaps especially those with autism, will work better towards a goal when there is positive reinforcement in the form of tokens earned by completing tasks. This is sometimes referred to as a “Token Economy”. The tokens could be small pictures relating to the pupil’s special interest eg Thomas the Tank engine.
The Token Board should be laminated when the pupil’s name is placed at the top. The pupil could then choose from a Choice Board the activity that they wish to do after earning the correct number of tokens. This is placed in the box beside “I’m working for:” using velcro. Laminated tokens should then be placed using velcro in each of the ten boxes. When all ten boxes are filled with tokens, the pupil has earned their preferred activity.
