Last Monday saw the launch of a new book “Enhancing the Learning and Teaching of Irish With ICTs” (Ag Cur Barr Feabhais Ar Fhoghlaim Agus Ar Theagasc Na Gaeilge Le TFC). The book was launched by Seán O Foghlú, Secretary General, Department of Education  and Skills (DES) in Dublin West Education Centre (DWEC). The book is published by DWEC, supported by Navan Education Centre. The book is also supported by the Professional Development Support Service (PDST). Additionally, this book was fully supported by an Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta (COGG).It has been edited by Primary Principal Robbie O’ Leary, who has edited previous books in the series.

The book consists of twelve chapters dealing with different aspects of technology which can be used to enhance the teaching and learning of An Ghaeilge in the classroom. It provides examples of how teachers are using technology in a practical way to making learning of Gaeilge interesting and fun for pupils. Chapters in the book include:

  • Creating Customised Resources
  • The Interactive Whiteboard and Gaeilge
  • Animation
  • Content Free Applications
  • An Ghaeilge and Mobile Technology (which I have contributed)
  • Gaeilge and Google Apps
  • iBooks Author

As with previous books in this series, a copy of the book will arrive in every primary school in the country. It is well worthwhile having this book as a reference in every school, as a repository of tips, ideas and practical examples of integrating ICT into Gaeilge lessons. Additional copies of the book can be purchased from Dublin West Education Centre.
